TIM
2017 Freelance Project for Tencent
Increase the usage of online editing, guide users to use collaborative features and improving work productivity
OVERVIEW
Since Tencent TIM launched in 2016, its simple style was generally popular with Chinese people compared to QQ. But its main features - online documentation and schedule management attracted little attention. The data shows that ONLY 5% of TIM users use online documents. Our mission is to optimize online editing features, guide users to use collaborative functions.

USER RESEARCH
Get to Understand Why Only 5% of TIM Customers Use Online Editing
In order to understand the daily work patterns, the overall processes, and whether people need to work together and collaborate in China, our team interviewed 18 people from different fields of life, including lawyer, engineer, doctor, teacher, etc.
User Quotes:
我还以为这就是一个简约版的聊天软件, 没想到还能在线编辑…
在线文档隐藏的太深了!!! 如果不是有人告诉我,我自己不会主动去点的…
According to the user research, we know that how to guide everyone in TIM to start using the online editing features is our optimized entry point. Also, during the interview, every participant expressed that if TIM has such a feature, easy and safe to use, they are willing to try to use it. Therefore, two of the purposes of optimization is to GUIDE USERS to find out and use the online editing feature from the operational flow, and to make the entire interface more prominent in the concept of 'LIGHT WORK'.
PROPOSALS

Considering the complexity of the issue and the difficulty of implementation, we provided multiple solutions to optimize the usability of 'online editing' feature, in terms of two aspects - making the feature more visible as well as making the user flow more concise and clear.
Proposal 1 — Make the Feature More Visible
Proposal 2 — Make the User Flow More Concise and Clear
REDESIGN
Information Architecture & Feature Mapping & Prototyping
Based on the current information architecture, we Reorganized The Structure:
a. Take the ‘online document’ and ‘schedule management’ out of the hidden ‘I’ tab to the navigation bar
b. Classify the content in the previous 'Contact' tab into the 'Light Work' tab
c. Add a 'Create Document' feature in the 'Message' window
d. Add a 'Quick Share' feature in the 'Online Document' tab
